DRAMATIS PERSONAE
The wanderers of the Unfinished World.
NINJAI
"Who am I? Where did I come from?"
A young, wide-eyed ninja and samurai hybrid who wanders an ancient, fantastical world in search of his lost identity. Grappling with amnesia, Ninjai is curious, brave, and deeply philosophical — seeking answers about his lineage with every step he takes. He prays the Lord guides him, believing nothing can stop his search.
Despite his child-like innocence, Ninjai is lethal, despatching bandits, demons, and hardened warriors with swift precision. His spiritual journey deepens in Chapter 10, where a wise sage teaches him to slow his heart and project his consciousness outside his body.
LITTLE BIRD
"Chirp...Chirp!"
Ninjai's ever-present avian companion and the emotional heart of the series. Little Bird engages in witty, heartfelt conversations with Ninjai, offering pragmatic wisdom, comic relief, and unwavering loyalty throughout their journey. The Bird's bravery in perilous moments repeatedly comes to Ninjai's aid — most memorably in Chapter 11.
Far from a passive sidekick, Little Bird is fiercely perceptive and protective. Their bond is the series' core relationship — a reminder that even the most solitary warrior needs a companion.
TAKAGAWA
"Let his bones be a warning to all who would defy me."
The ruthless warlord and supreme leader of the Red Dragon Clan, Takagawa is Ninjai's primary antagonist across multiple chapters. He has terrorised entire villages into abandonment, dispatching his henchmen — Zeguri, Soji, Tosumi, and Suu-Chi — to hunt down the young ninja who continues to kill his prized warriors.
Feared for his extreme violence and encroaching madness, Takagawa's authority over his men begins to crack as Ninjai defies him at every turn. In Chapter 10, he is blinded in one eye during a supernatural confrontation — a wound that only deepens his obsession.
THE RED DRAGON CLAN
Takagawa's army of demonic bandits and fearsome warriors who serve as the organised opposition throughout Ninjai's journey. Ninjai is warned about them by Jatoshi of the rival Blue Lotus Clan: every demon of theirs Ninjai kills makes him a higher-priority target for Takagawa's increasingly unhinged reprisals.
The Clan's footsoldiers ambush Ninjai in forests and villages, deploying archers, samurai, and summoned creatures with overwhelming numbers — a stark contrast to Ninjai's solitary, precise fighting style.
DITOSHI
"Beware in these lands you travel. The Demio of the Red Dragon Clan will be hunting you."
A noble warrior of the Blue Lotus Clan encountered by Ninjai at a river crossing in Chapter 4. Ditoshi offers Ninjai a ride across the water and introduces himself with quiet dignity before delivering a crucial warning: the Red Dragon Clan's Demio is already hunting Ninjai for slaying their prized archer.
Courteous and battle-aware, Jatoshi parts with Ninjai on respectful terms, pointing him toward the Kiyoki Pass and expressing hope that their paths may cross again — a brief but meaningful encounter that shapes the dangers ahead.
THE BLUE LOTUS CLAN
A rival faction to the Red Dragon Clan, the Blue Lotus Clan are a honourable warrior order who move through the same dangerous lands as Ninjai. Their member Jatoshi is aware of the Red Dragon Clan's movements and hierarchy, suggesting an ongoing conflict between the two clans that predates Ninjai's journey.
Though their role in the series is limited, the Blue Lotus Clan represents the existence of structured, principled warrior orders in contrast to Takagawa's brutal reign — a hint at a wider world of clan politics that surrounds Ninjai's solitary path.
